Castiglione del Terziere. The origins of the castle date back to the early Middle Ages, as evidenced by certain surviving wall structures, which indicate a dating prior to the 11th century. In ancient times it was called Castiglione dei Corbellari, from the name of the Lords who had the dominion of a territory including Virgoletta. Castiglione assumed the ‘Terziere’ attribute from 1275, to be included in the third part of the feudal territories of Alberto Malaspina di Filattiera, branch of the Spino Fiorito.
At the end of the Sixties of our century, the castle and the village were in a situation of extreme static precariousness. The castle, in particular, was practically a ruin that threatened ruin. Massive foundation works first ensured its stability, and others, disassembly and restitution, carried out in total and absolute respect for architectural truth, and with scientific systems, saved it. Immediately afterwards, the ideological – spiritual restoration proceeded, that is, to furnish the castle as it would have been if it had been, and that is the castle was equipped with what can be used to ‘breathe’, and therefore to imagine and understand, it had been ‘breathed in’ and understood, for centuries, through the presence of so many jurists, magistrates, judges, prosecutors, notaries, lawyers, and men of letters. The ideological – spiritual restoration (the most arduous) consisted in composing an important library, a historical archive, a representative picture gallery, and a school of musical philology and vocal polyphony.
For over thirty years, the castle and the village have assumed precise cultural functions, thanks to the establishment of the ‘Niccolò V’ Humanistic Studies Center, and the Free Chair of Philology and Vocal Polyphony of Castiglione del Terziere
